The vestibular system includes the parts of the inner ear and brain that help control balance and eye movements. If the system is damaged by disease, aging, or injury, vestibulardisorders can result, and are often associated with one or more of these symptoms, among others: Vertigo and dizziness
Auditory Verbal therapy is a highly specialist early intervention program which equips the clinician with the skills to maximize a deaf child’s speech and language development. The Auditory Verbal approach stimulates auditory brain development and enables deaf children with hearing aids and cochlear implants to make sense of the sound relayed by their devices. As a result, children with hearing loss are better able to develop listening and spoken language skills, with the aim of giving them the same opportunities and an equal start in life as hearing children.
Dysphagia is the medical term for swallowing difficulties. People with dysphagia have problems swallowing certain foods or liquids, while others can’t swallow at all. Other signs of dysphagia include: coughing or choking when eating or drinking, bringing food back up, sometimes through the nose. A course in assessment and management of Dysphagia will help professionals to rehabilitate such patients effectively.
Oral Placement Therapy was developed by Sara Rosenfeld Johnson. After using this particular technique along with traditional speech therapy techniques for the past 5 years, it was found to be quite effective in helping children move from being non-verbal to making a few sounds and so forth. We have also found this technique to be most useful when helping children with feeding difficulties or food sensitivities.
Feeding is an interaction between a child and caregiver, and feeding difficulty is an umbrella term encompassing all feeding problems, regardless of etiology, severity, or consequences, while feeding disorder refers to an inability or refusal to eat sufficient quantities or variety of food to maintain adequate nutritional status, leading to substantial consequences, including malnutrition, impaired growth, and possible neurocognitive dysfunction. Hence it becomes important to understand these issues and work towards the proper intervention so the quality of life of a child is preserved.
A sound spectrograph is a laboratory instrument that displays a graphical representation of the strengths of the various component frequencies of a sound as time passes. SLP uses the spectrograph as a tool for analyzing vocal output. It is used for identifying the strength and frequencies of formants, and for real-time biofeedback in voice training and therapy.
The basis of audiological rehabilitation is mostly the prescription of a proper amplification device and other related technologies. Hence it is important for audiologists to be well-verse in the recent advances in the field of amplification devices and other related aspects of hearing aid prescription which will make them able to provide better and technologically advanced solutions to a client’s hearing and other related issues.
Augmentative and alternative communication (AAC) encompasses the communication methods used to supplement or replace speech or writing for those with impairments in the production or comprehension of spoken or written language. AAC is used by those with a wide range of speech and language impairments, including congenital impairments such as cerebral palsy, intellectual impairment and autism, and acquired conditions such as amyotrophic lateral sclerosis and Parkinson’s disease.
Tinnitus is the perception of noise (e.g., ringing, buzzing, hissing) in the absence of an external sound source. It may be perceived in one or both ears, centered in the head, or localized outside the head. The impact of tinnitus on one’s quality of life can vary (from minimal to severe)
Hyperacusis is an exaggerated response to ordinary sounds in the environment that are tolerated well by those without hyperacusis. Hyperacusis may result in a range of reactions and emotional responses to sound, varying by individual. Categories of hyperacusis include loudness, annoyance, fear, and pain. As with tinnitus, hyperacusis varies in severity. The negative responses to sound may be strong enough to cause avoidance of normal interactions and situations and may significantly alter a person’s life.
Both these issues affect the quality of life of an individual significantly and may result in various other issues like stress depression etc. These should not be overlooked even for a normal hearing individual and hence understanding their assessment and management is critical to an audiologist.
